Pittsburgh Penguins Offseason Recap

Pittsburgh Penguins Offseason Recap

Projected Cap Space: $70,000

Signed/Acquired:

Jack Johnson, Matt Cullen, Jimmy Hayes, Zach Trotman, Stefan Elliott, John Muse, Jamie Oleksiak, Derek Grant, Tristan Jarry, Bryan Rust

Lost/Traded:

Josh Jooris, Carter Rowney, Jarred Tinordi, Tom Kuhnhackl, Conor Sheary, Matt Hunwick, Jean-S├ębastien Dea

The Penguins did not have a good offseason. They traded Conor Sheary and Matt Hunwick to the Sabres as a salary dump. But, trading Sheary will hurt them this season. The player to trade was Phil Kessel as he is aging and his contract is huge. They did re-sign Jamie Oleksiak and Bryan Rust which was key. But, signing Jack Johnson to a 5 year deal worth $3.25 Million per year did not make any sense. In addition, they failed to sign a backup goalie. They are still a playoff team. I do not see them going far into the playoffs due to goaltending depth and minimum options to make the team better near the trade deadline (due to salary cap).

Offseason Grade:
